Because private cars or buses are not allowed to enter the scenic area of Mount Everest, travelers need to make a transfer at Everest Parking Lot. You can first get to Everest Parking Lot from Shigatse or other nearby towns by driving, and then catch an environment-friendly park bus (energized by electricity) to reach Rongbuk Monastery Gusthouse or EBC Tent Camp. It usually takes about 30 minutes from Everest Parking Lot to Rongbuk Monastery.

Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse vs Everest Tent Camp: Opening Time

Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse is always open all year round usually. No matter when you visit Mount Everest, it is available to stay in Mount Everest if you manage to book it.

Everest Tent Camp is composed of many tents operated by different Tibetan nomads who live in the surrounding villages. These tents are only available from late April to early October because the owners will go back home during the frozen winter. The specific time varies according to weather and the volume of tourists.

There are about 25 rooms in Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse. Each room is equipped with clean and freshly changed bed sheets, pillow and duvet covers. It also had a mirror, a set of drawers, and a bowl acted as a standalone basin without drainage. Electric blanket is offered to heat your bed. The guesthouse offers free Wi-Fi and the speed is pretty good.

Water Supply: There is no running water equipped in the room so taking a shower is out of the question. You will be provided with a flask with boiling water for drinking and washing.

Electricity: The room is well equipped with a bulb and power socket but the corridor and toilets only have weak lighting.

Sightseeing: Mount Everest can be seen from the courtyard and some of the rooms. Watching the sunset and sunrise is a very special experience from the room.

Rooms and Amenities of Everest Tent Camp

There are many tents in Everest Tent Camp providing rough accommodation as well. Usually, a tent is separated into 3 or 4 smaller subsections, one section for the owner and his family's daily activities - staying, cooking and sleeping, and other sections are guest sleeping area. The sleeping sections are all dormitory style with about 6 ~ 10 adjoining beds which means that you have to share a room with other tourists together. The beds are very soft and comfortable. There is a yak-dung-and-wood-fired oven for boiling water and for heat. Water bottle with hot water, power socket, tables are equipped in the room. Some tents provide free Wi-Fi and some don't.

Water Supply: Boiling water for drink and washing is also available but there is no running water and shower.

Electricity: Lights may go out at midnight when the generators is switch off, so you are suggested to charge your phone, camera and flashlight in Shigatse before you go to Mount Everest.

Sightseeing: No window is available in the tents but you can walk out for the amazing Mount Everest scenery.

Other: The tenement made of yak hair can withstand downpours and strong sunshine, but lack of soundproof effect.

Toilets in Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse and Everest Tent Camp are both basic and rough.

In Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse, there is a communal toilet with several squats outside the rooms, in a separate block. It is very simple, no toilet paper, no doors, no running water and only weak light.

The toilet in Everest Tent Camp is more basic. It's a truck with holes for squatting. , No toilet paper, no doors or running water, either.

There is small restaurant adjacent to Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse. It offers simple Chinese dishes, mainly Fried Rice and Noodle Soup, as well as different drinks (black tea, coffee, Coca-Cola, sprite, mineral water, bottle beer, etc.). Dining time is not limited, but you have to wait for a long time in peak meal times. In the center of dining room, there are two stoves to keep you warm.

There is no real restaurant in Everest Tent Camp, but the tent's owner can make you tasty noodle soup for dinner and yak tea and porridge for breakfast. Plenty drinkable hot water is accessible.

Which to Choose During Your Everest Tour

High Altitude Sickness Tips

It is easy to suffer from High Altitude Sickness for people who haven't acclimatized themselves well to the plateau as Rongbuk Monastery has a high altitude of 4,980 meters. We suggest you take a full physical examination and ask your doctor's suggestion to make sure you can visit Tibet before your trip. It is also helpful if you spend several days in Lhasa and surrounding area where the altitudes are lower for acclimatization. There is no doctor or hospital nearby, if you suffer from serious high altitude sickness, tell your travel guide and ask to leave there as soon as possible.

Necessary Permits for Yamdrok Lake and Namtso Lake

To visit Tibet, you have to obtain the Tibet Travel Permit (Tibet Entry Permit) which is issued by Tibet Tourism Bureau and can only be applied by authorized Tibet travel agency.
