Soft Sleepers on Tibet Trains - Coziest Tibet Train Experience
What is the Soft Sleeper?
The Soft Sleeper is a common kind of berth in most regular trains in China, including K, T, Z, L and some overnight D trains (a kind of high speed bullet trains). As its name applying, the Soft Sleeper is a settled single berth with soft beddings equipped in some carriages on the train. Usually there are only 2 carriages which have compartments of Soft Sleepers, accommodating passengers up to 64. Each compartment is a single cabin with a private door facing the aisle, and has 4 Soft Sleepers inside, two upper berths and two lower berths, which are about 30 inches (75cm) wide and 75 inches (190cm) long. The Soft Sleepers are fixed on shelf-like beds which are made of steel, and can bear a weigh around 300kg (661.4ponds).

Upper Berth or Lower Berth?
There are 2 lower berths and 2 upper berths in each cabin. Usually, the lower berths are more convenient for passengers to get in and off from beds. Because the lower berths are closer to the window, so passengers can have a better view of the outside scenery than from the upper berth. But other passengers in the compartment may sit on your berth in the daytime. While the upper berth has a more private space as well as a cheaper price.
My Sleeper is upper or lower?
The Soft Sleepers in each carriage are numbered from 1 to 36. The even numbers are the upper bunks while the odd numbers are the lower bunks. If you travel with friends, remember to tell the conductor that you wish to stay in the same compartment.
