High Altitude Sickness is one of the biggest challenges when travelling in Tibet. According to our experience, most people will be fine up to 3500m above sea level, as the altitude go higher up to 4500m, mild symptoms as shortness of breath, headache might occur. Adverse reactions may vary from person to person. In most cases, the symptoms are mild and will subside in several hours to several days as the body acclimatizes.

Mild Symptoms of AMS include:

- Rapid pulse (heart rate)
- Nausea or vomiting
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Poor sleeping

Day 1 Lhasa

Want to explore some other features of Tibet instead of the monasteries? Let's take an exciting trip to the holy lake Namtso which is about 5 hours driving from Lhasa City. You will arrive at Namtso Lake around the early afternoon. Take some rest and throw yourself into the incredible landscape of holy lake.

Namtso Lake is the highest saltwater lake in the world with an altitude of 4718 meters, also the second largest saltwater lake in China (after the Qinghai Lake). It’s quite common for tourists who are awestruck at the Namtso at the first sight. With the snowy mountains in the background, the crystal-clear dazzling blue water, Namtso is stretching to the horizon. In clear days, the lake looks like a beautiful turquoise surrounded by magnificent snow-capped Tanggula Mountains, and the lakeshore is green, wide and open, dotted with tents, yaks and sheep of local nomads. For travelers, Namtso is the ideal place for photography, while for Tibetans, it is a scared and magical lake for pilgrimage.

Lastly, drive back to Lhasa for accommodation.

Tips of Today: 1) the altitudes of Namtso Lake region is about 5, 000 meters, so you should be fully prepared for high altitude sickness. Do remember to keep warm all the time and avoid strenuous activity; 2) if you want to spend longer time and watch sunset and sunrise, you can also accommodate at Namtso for a night, but the accommodation condition is very basic, so is the food supply.

This trip is ideal for those with limited time but still want to see the Namtso Lake. From a day spent exploring the unique beauty of Namtso Lake, experience Tibet the way it is meant to be experienced.

Recommended Groups: All groups. Best for youth, couples, and photographers.
Conditions: tour is moderately challenging, as the maximum altitude is over 5,000 meters above sea level. The drive from Lhasa to Namtso, about 250km, takes around 4 hours. The road is in good condition, but it is a bit hilly and has many turns. The scenery you will see during the ride is impressive, so be sure to take the opportunity to take pictures! The conditions near Namsto Lake can be harsh. Some customers may have mild high altitude sickness symptoms, but most people don’t have any problems.
Best time: Namsto Lake will be closed from December to March, so the best time to take this tour is from April to November. In April the lake is frozen and tends to have a unique appearance, though it is quite cold.

Hi Leo,

I found the form but couldn’t type directly on it. So, here are my answers.

• My travel consultant was Leo. He promptly answered all my questions through e-mails.

• The tour arrangement was perfect for my needs. It was not fully packed from early morning to late evening. I had enough time to rest and recover for the next day.

• I have already written a review on China Travel Guide & Visa News group page on Facebook recommending your service.

• Overall, I think you’re very transparent about what the tour covers. You provided a detailed itinerary that was easy to follow. Other tourists with other agencies in my group didn’t get such detailed itinerary. It was also easy to contact you through e-mail and get prompt replies.

• I think the guides should give out name cards with their name and contact information. We should also be told the name of the driver picking us up at the hotel. On my last day, I was told the driver would pick me up at noon. When I checked out at 11:30, he was already there. I asked if he’s my noon pick up driver to the airport. He confirmed it. Then around noon I got a call from my tour guide, but my local phone service somehow disconnected the call. I thought I was picked up by a different driver. It was very confusing.
