Where is Mount Everest - Mount Everest in Nepal and Tibet China
Mount Everest (coordinates: 27°59′17″ N, 86°55′31″E), the highest mountain in the world, is located in the border region of China and Nepal with its peak point at elevation of 8,848m (290,290ft) in China. That means China and Nepal share this mountain, whose north part is on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau in China and south side lies in Nepal.
As the main peak of Himalaya Mountains (“Hometown of Snow” in Tibetan), Everest stretches its body from east to west just like the Himalaya Mountains do. It is also called Mt. Qomolangma and Sagarmāthā by in different countries.

Being a natural boundary line between China and Nepal, Mount Everest has the highest point of 8,848m above sea level in China, spreading its north parts on Qinghai Tibet Plateau ranging from 5,800m ~ 6,200m around. Because blocked by high mountains, the weather of Everest regions in China is extremely harsh all the year round, and uncertain factors like storm wind and snow often appear in this area.
Hiking route of north part of Everest in China is more challenging than in Nepal due to the higher mountains and more complicated climate conditions. The climate here is mainly featured to be a complicated continental highland climate. It could be sunshine in the morning but fierce wind in the afternoon, quite changeable within a single day.
Besides, both Nepal and China have an Everest Base Camp (EBC) located at elevation of over 5,000m to provide trekking support for mountaineers. The Chinese base camp is about 8km to the Rongbuk Monastery, the highest temple in the world, which is elevated 4,980m above sea level.

Mount Everest in Nepal

Mount Everest was named as Mt.Sagarmatha since 1960s by Nepal Government, which means Forehead in the Sky in Nepali. Now south part of this mountain is in northeast of Kathmandu Nepal, belongs to the Sagarmatha National Park where lies 7 high mountains all as high as over 7,000m above sea level.
Although the summit of Everest is in China, half of its body – the south part is located in Nepal, neighboring north Tibet China. Compared to north areas in Tibet China, Mount Everest in Nepal has a relatively gentle terrain with elevation ranging from 5,500m ~6,100m. And the south Everest side in Nepal is mainly affected by monsoon seasonally; making it has more chance to have a good weather to climb Everest because of the warm and moist airflow from the Indian Ocean.
The world famous EBC Trekking Route of Everest in Nepal, starts from Lukla Airport and arrive the Base Campe as destination, is chosen by many mountaineers, because it’s less difficult as in Everest North Slope of China due to a lower height and more possibility of good weather and climate.

Surroundings of Mount Everest - Peaks Nearby Mt.Everest
Not standing alone in middle of Himalayas, the highest Mount Everest is surrounded by many well-known mountains nearby. These accompanying hills with elevation of 7,000m count up to over 40 in total, most of which are quite familiar to the public, like Mount Lhotse and Makalu.
Mt. Kangchengjunga, the third highest mountain in the world with elevation of 8,586m, is located in middle of Himalaya Mountains and the border of Nepal and India. A four climbers mountaineering team from British was confirmed to be the first one arrived at Kangchengjunga, where is about 120km from southeast Mount Everest.
Mt.Lhotse, the fourth highest mountain in the world at an elevation of 8,516m, is located 3km of south Mount Everest. The two friends stand next to each other just across a col.
Mt. Makalu, the fifth highest mountain in the world at an altitude of 8,463m, is situated 24km from southeast Mount Everest. North part of Makalu is in Tibet China and south is in Nepal. First team of mountaineers reached Makalu was 9 members from France in 1955.
Except the above renowned mountains, there are lots of other hills facing Everest in all directions, such as Changtse (7,543m) in north, Nuptse (7,855m) and Pumori (7,154m) inwest side, Mount Cho-Oyu (8,201m) in southwest.
